We've run two in-house hackathons at pafin. People from engineering, design, business and beyond team up and take an idea to a working prototype in just a few days. Here we focus on our 2026 hackathon, where every team built with AI, and the projects that grew out of it.

Why we run a hackathon

In the age of AI, keeping up is not optional. The hackathon has three goals: to raise every employee's ability to use, master and multitask with AI tooling; to close the gap in AI proficiency across the company; and to find new projects, new businesses and new areas to take on.

We set the themes to be challenging, large in scale and interesting, whether or not they relate to pafin's existing services.

Working alongside colleagues with deeper experience, or more fluency with the tools, raises the quality of everyday work afterwards. On the first day I asked every team to put talking to and teaching each other above all else.

This second edition put the process ahead of ranking the projects.

Four teams of mixed roles, each driving its own project

For the hackathon, teams were not made of engineers alone. Across the four teams we mixed in people from business development, marketing, customer success, HR and design.
What to build was left to each team.

Projects from the second hackathon

The final lineup was four teams, with a presentation session on June 26.

fakestream

2nd hackathon (2026) / Open source
Image from the fakestream news release

A development emulator that recreates Amazon Kinesis, AWS's data streaming service, on your own PC. It was developed to solve a challenge in our in-house development environment.

During the hackathon it replaced our in-house setup, and we later released it as open source under the MIT license.

Sumazou

2nd hackathon (2026) / Launched October 2026
Image from the Sumazou news release

A service that sends the medical images patients receive from a hospital on CD/DVD to their own smartphone, using a dedicated kiosk.

Insert the CD/DVD into the kiosk, scan the QR code on the kiosk screen with the Sumazou app, then enter the confirmation code shown on the phone into the kiosk.

After building a prototype at the hackathon, pafin kept developing it and launched Sumazou commercially in October 2026. Its adoption by Kanto Neurosurgical Hospital has also been announced.

Projects we are growing in-house

Social

necho

A prototype social space where you take the form of a cat, a rock or a cloud and spend time doing nothing next to others. About 80% of the residents around you are AI, and the whole idea is that you can't tell who is a person and who is an AI.

It is not a place to chase likes. The aim is to leave a little lighter than you arrived. A demo was shared internally on presentation day.

Workplace

Emojact

Type the feeling or meaning you want to get across, and it finds the Slack custom emoji that match.

Prototype
Crypto

Cryptrack

A platform that gathers news and events about crypto regulation, exchanges and coins, so you can follow them in one place.

Workplace

recolul UI

pafin works on a full flextime system (opens in a new tab): each month has set working hours and a cap on work-from-home (WFH) hours. This in-house tool uses attendance records to work out the hours left to work and the WFH hours still available that month.

Builds for Windows, macOS and Ubuntu were shared internally in June 2024.

Workplace

pafin TV

A screen on the office TV that shows cryptact's sales and other numbers in real time. It was built so that members who rarely deal with numbers in their daily work can still get a feel for where the company stands. It is still on air in the office all day.

bottin

A directory that puts pafin's services and links to internal tools in one place, so new members can quickly find what they need. It also folded in ideas for an internal portal and onboarding.

It is still live internally and used every day.

EVM address browser extension

A browser extension that adds context from pafin's data to EVM addresses (Ethereum-style wallet and smart contract addresses) on web pages.
